ATID Facilities
The Department offers dedicated facilities for teaching and research.
Apparel Design and Production Laboratories
The apparel design laboratories house equipment for design, development and production, such as dress forms, pattern making tables, and industrial and conventional sewing equipment.A computer laboratory with industry software and hardware is available to the design students. Adobe Design Software is utilized for flat drawings and presentations. Lectra software includes Mikalis for specifications, U4ia for print design, and Modaris and Diamino for pattern design and marker making. A digitizer, larger plotter and printers are housed in the lab.
Interior Design Studios
The Interior Design Program offers three dedicated studios for interior design instruction. Each studio is equipped with drafting tables with parallel bars and stools for student use. Students also have access to cutting tables and light tables for project work and outlets for power to personal computers and other electronic equipment. All studios provide students with wireless Internet access and have presentation and critique space including chalkboards, projection areas and pin-up space. Students can store their supplies and equipment on-site in secure lockers located both in the studios and in the building corridors near the studios.
K-State Costume and Textiles Museum
A collection of more than 15,000 items donated during the past century by K-State faculty, friends and alumni, the K-State Costume and Textiles Museum is a repository of clothing, accessories, fabrics, quilts and other apparel and textile items with historical, artistic, educational or research significance. The museum contains items dating back to the 1700s, and is well-known for its collection of Chinese textiles from the Ch'ing Dynasty and its ethnic costumes and textiles. The collection includes a rich assortment of items from more than 200 years of Kansas history. It includes numerous American and European designer pieces such as: Ann Fogarty, Nan Duskin, Ben Zuckerman, Jerry Silverman, Bill Blass, Halston, Oscar de LaRenta, Adolfo, Christian Dior, Geoffrey Beene, Pucci, Valentino, Schiaparelli, and Paulene Trigere.
Used as a resource for teaching and research, the collection is housed in a climate- and light-controlled environment. Artifacts are displayed in exhibitions held in the ATID Gallery, in display cases throughout Justin Hall, and special off-site events. The Friends of the Costume and Textiles Museum, a volunteer group dedicated to raising money for the expansion of the museum and increasing public awareness of its many treasures, prepares regular events to allow the public opportunities to see the collection until enough money can be raised for a permanent museum facility.
Institute for Environmental Research
Dr. Elizabeth McCullough, a textile faculty member in the department, is also the Co-Director of the Institute for Environmental Research. This internationally known institute conducts studies on the relationship between people and their thermal environment. Consequently, the insulation and water vapor permeability of clothing and sleeping bags systems is a major part of their research focus. The facility houses eight climate-controlled chambers and extraordinary thermal measuring devices (a sweating hot plate, water vapor transmission rate measuring devices, walking and sweating thermal manikins). Many graduate students have conducted research projects at IER.
ATID Computer Lab
The ATID Computer Lab provides students and faculty access to computers equipped with AutoCAD 2000, Excel, Lectra, and Adobe design software. This lab also provides access to printing and plotting equipment that is used in project development and final presentation.
Resource Library
The Resource Library provides students with access to product samples and product literature, technical information about construction and finish materials, specifications and technical literature on codes and standards, as well as on-line access through "Design-on-Line" services.
Other KSU Facilities
All programs within ATID share a gallery/critique space and conference room. The University also offers equipment that can be made available to our students, including a scanning electron microscope, x-ray photoelectron spectrometers, neutron activation analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance, x-ray florescence and x-ray diffraction equipment.
