Objective: Teach clients easy ways to serve and eat more fruits and vegetables for snacks.

Pick a Better Snack was developed in Iowa, and, with their permission, we have adapted it for use in Kansas. Focus groups were completed with low income families. Focus group participants said that one reason they don’t eat more fruits and vegetables is that it takes too long to prepare them. They also indicated that the easiest way to add fruits and vegetables would be for snacks. We’re encouraging people to look for ways to add fruits and vegetables to their snacks.

USDA Food Stamp Nutrition Education and the United Methodist Health
Ministry Fund have provided funding for this campaign. Pick a Better Snack in
Kansas is coordinated through the Kansas Nutrition Network.

Appropriate Occasion: Any time of the year - fresh fruits and vegetables when they are in season, canned, frozen and dried.

Appropriate Audience: SRS offices, WIC clinics, Voucher pick-up, young families, adults and youth.
