Antivirus Info
The College of Human Ecology uses the Trend OfficeScan Antivirus software that is throughout the University. All computers managed by the College have Trend managed version installed and virus definitions are automatically updated, so this is mostly for personal or home use.
The HUMEC Network Support Group strongly urges people with home computers to install Trend OfficeScan. As K-State faculty, staff or students, this software can be installed on your home computer at no cost. If you have a personal comptuer that is hooked up to the campus network (wired or wireless) over 20% of the time, please install the managed version so campus can deploy updates faster in case of outbreak.
There are two ways to access the campus antivirus software for installation:
- Download the software from http://antivirus.ksu.edu
- Get the K-State Catpack CD from it's distribution points.
After installing the software follow the instructions to update your virus definitions. It is set to update itself regularly, this is just a first time manual update. Trend also can detect and clean spyware programs to help keep your machines run better and keep your private infomation private. The scheduled weekly scans will help to clean off any spyware that have accumulated.
E-mails are constantly circulating with virus threats and the actions that users need to take to protect themselves against it or rid themselves of the infection. In almost all cases the e-mails are hoaxes. Before forwarding the report of a virus threat or deleting files from your computer in response to a threat, please visit Trend Virus info page and lookup the name of the reported virus or the file names the e-mail requests you delete. Many of these e-mails circulating are merely hoaxes.
